Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in OtztalAT

Tyrol's longest side valley, where glacier-fed gorges at the valley mouth have made this corner of Austria the canyoning and whitewater capital of the Alps since the 1980s.

Why here

The Ötztaler Ache is the benchmark of Austrian whitewater, a glacier-fed river that has drawn European raft guides and kayakers since the 1980s. What makes the valley work as a destination is the progression: the Imster Schlucht next door runs friendly class II-III water that first-timers and families handle comfortably, while the middle and lower Ötztaler Ache serve up pushy, continuous class IV+ that guides treat with respect. You can start the week splashing through the Imst gorge and end it on one of the hardest commercially rafted rivers in the Alps without moving your base. Kayakers get the same ladder, plus a deep pool of local knowledge from outfitters who have run these rivers for decades.

Season runs May to early October, driven entirely by glacier melt. June and July bring peak flows, the biggest and most demanding water of the year, when the lower Ötztaler Ache is at full volume. May and September are lower and more technical, better suited to learning. The water sits between 6 and 10°C all season, so full wetsuits are standard. Afternoon flows run higher than morning flows on hot days as the glaciers melt.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Fly into Innsbruck, 45 minutes by car or direct train to Ötztal-Bahnhof, or Munich at about two and a half hours. Rafting bases sit at the valley entrance around Ötztal-Bahnhof, Haiming and Sautens, with the Imster Schlucht put-in a short shuttle away. Half-day and full-day trips run daily in season with all gear provided. Book ahead for July and August weekends. Kayakers bringing their own boats will want a car for shuttles.

Outfitter

A rafting and canyoning outfitter based in the lower Ötztal, running daily trips on the Imster Schlucht for beginners and the Ötztaler Ache for crews who want the real thing. Guides know these rivers year in, year out, and trips scale honestly with the water level rather than promising everything to everyone. Wetsuits, helmets and transport from the base are included.
