Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Kresna Gorge
The Struma river's granite gorge south of Sofia, the Balkans' most accessible reliable whitewater, with permanent riverside rafting bases.
Why here
The Kresna Gorge is the Balkans' most accessible dependable whitewater: the Struma cuts a granite defile ninety minutes south of Sofia and forty from Bansko, running a Class 3 main section of eight to twelve kilometers with spring snowmelt push, and the operators are not seasonal pop-ups but permanent riverside centers, the first rafting club in Bulgaria among them. It slots into any Sofia-Bansko-Melnik itinerary as the half-day of adrenaline between wine and mountains, and first-timers are the standard clientele rather than the exception.
Best months
March to August, with spring high water the lively window and mid-summer the family-friendly one. Class 2-3 needs no experience, only swimming ability; wetsuits and gear come with the trip.
Getting there & around
On the Sofia-Thessaloniki road; both bases sit riverside in the gorge. Half-day trips run daily in season and combine naturally with Melnik or Bansko.
