Whitewater Kayaking / Rafting in Cunovo
An artificial whitewater channel on a Danube island 14 km southeast of Bratislava, near the village of Cunovo, fed by the Cunovo dam and used for international canoe slalom since 1997.
Why here
Cunovo is a purpose-built whitewater course a short drive from central Bratislava, which makes serious moving water unusually easy to reach for a capital city. Two channels cut into the old Danube riverbed below the Cunovo dam carry a controllable current, graded from about class II up to class IV depending on how far the water flaps are opened. Since 1997 the venue has hosted a full competition calendar, including canoe-slalom World Cups, two European Championships and the 2011 World Championships, so the features are properly designed rather than natural chance. For a visitor that translates into guided raft descents on genuine standing waves without any wilderness approach, plus a kayak school on site for anyone wanting to learn to roll and read the water. The whole complex sits on a river island with a base for changing, camping and watching the racing.
Best months
Rafting runs from spring through early autumn, roughly May to September, when the course is turned on and staffed. The difficulty is set by the operator through the flow flaps, so the same channel can be a friendly introduction or a stiff class IV depending on the session. It is artificial moving water rather than a river trip, so descents are short and repeatable. Book ahead in summer, when the course also hosts training and events.
Getting there & around
The centre is on Cunovo island, about 20 minutes by car south of central Bratislava, and is easiest reached with a vehicle though seasonal buses serve the area. Rafting is arranged directly with the on-site operator, which supplies rafts, wetsuits, helmets and guides; sessions are short and often booked in blocks. The island base has parking, changing rooms, camping and a restaurant, so it works as a half-day trip out of the city.
