Surfing in SiargaoPH

A teardrop-shaped island off Mindanao facing the open Pacific, home to Cloud 9, the wave that put Philippine surfing on the map. Palm forests, tidal lagoons, and a laid-back surf town scene in General Luna round out the trip.

Why here

Cloud 9 is the Philippines' world-class wave: a hollow, powerful right over a reef shelf, famous enough to host international competitions and photogenic enough to have its own boardwalk viewing tower. Siargao's smarter story is everything around it: a string of reef breaks along the same coast, boat-access waves like Daku Island where the surf schools actually teach, and a town in General Luna built around the surf season. The island now protects its main wave, with beginner lessons banned on Cloud 9 itself, so the progression is honest: learn on the gentler nearby breaks, and earn the main event. Typhoon-season swell from August through November is when the Pacific delivers, making Siargao one of Asia's best reasons to travel in exactly the months most of Southeast Asia is off-season.

Peak swell runs roughly August through November, when Pacific typhoon energy lights up Cloud 9 and the outer reefs; September and October are the prime weeks and host the competition season. December through April is smaller and cleaner, better suited to learning. Cloud 9 itself is a reef break with a shallow shelf: beginner lessons are prohibited on it, so first-timers start at Daku, Jacking Horse, and the other soft breaks nearby.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Siargao (IAO) via Cebu or Manila, or take the ferry from Surigao City. General Luna is the base, about 30 minutes from the airport, with Cloud 9 a short ride up the coast. Lessons and board rental are walk-up outside the September-October competition weeks; boat trips to the outer breaks are arranged through schools or boatmen on the beach.
