Why here

The continental edge of Europe catches raw, unfiltered Atlantic swell from multiple directions. Protected national park status limits development and keeps crowds minimal. A serious surf zone for those who have outgrown the busier spots further north.

SW and NW swell year-round; peak September–March. Strong winds common — check conditions before paddling out. Water 15–18°C. Can be powerful and unforgiving at peak swell. Multiple exposed beaches; check which is sheltered on the day.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Fly to Faro (FAO) — the nearest airport, 2 hours by car (car hire at Faro Airport essential; no public transport serves Sagres usefully). Alternative: fly to Lisbon (LIS) and drive 3+ hours southwest. Sagres sits at the southwestern tip of Portugal — the exposed Atlantic position delivers the most powerful and consistent swell in the Algarve, but also the most wind. Multiple beaches suit different swell directions and wind angles: Beliche (sheltered cove, long rides), Tonel (powerful peaks, less shelter), Mareta (beach in front of town, beginner-friendly in small swell), Castelejo (remote north-facing bay, different swell window). A car is essential to navigate between them. Fewer surf schools than Peniche or Ericeira — experienced surfers self-guided. Accommodation limited: book ahead for summer, options thin outside the July-August peak. Budget to mid. Combine with Cabo de São Vicente (the most southwestern point of mainland Europe, 6km from Sagres — genuinely dramatic) and the granite sea cliff climbing routes along the Algarve coast west of Lagos.
