Home of Supertubes, consistently ranked the world's best right-hand point break, firing on Southern Ocean winter swells.

Why here

Supertubes is consistently ranked the best right-hand point break in the world: winter groundswells out of the Southern Ocean wrap down the point in mechanical, 300-meter walls, groomed by offshore westerlies, and the World Surf League's Championship Tour has stopped here since 1984. The break itself is experts-only by both skill and local etiquette, but the town is a full surf ladder: learners start at Kitchen Windows and Dolphin Beach a few hundred meters away, and the surf schools run year-round. July brings the Open and the world's best surfing the wave at its best.

May to September is prime: southwest winter groundswell plus offshore westerlies. The WSL Corona Open runs a mid-July window (July 10-20 in 2026). Water is cool, 14-18C, so bring or rent a good wetsuit. Occasional shark sightings have paused contest heats; spotters operate during events.
