Scuba Diving in Yap
A traditional island in the western Caroline Islands, famous for its giant stone money and for the manta rays that gather year-round at reef-channel cleaning stations. One of the most intact indigenous cultures in the Pacific, ringed by untouched reef.
Why here
Yap built its reputation on manta rays. In the channels that cut through the island's reef, notably the Mi'l Channel and Goofnuw Channel, resident reef manta rays queue at coral cleaning stations while small fish pick them clean, and divers kneel on the sand and watch them soar overhead at arm's length. Yap runs mantas year-round, and in the December to April mating season the channels fill with courtship trains of several animals at once, one of the most reliable manta encounters on the planet. The state protected these waters as a manta sanctuary back in 2008, among the first anywhere. Beyond the mantas, Yap offers walls, grey reef and grey nurse sharks, and mandarinfish that emerge at dusk, all on reef so remote it sees a fraction of the divers of better-known destinations. Above water, a living culture of stone money villages and thatched meeting houses makes surface intervals as memorable as the dives.
Best months
Manta encounters run all year, with the biggest aggregations and mating trains from December to April; that window can bring more rain and some current in the channels. Manta dives are shallow and gentle, suitable for all certified divers, while the outer walls and shark dives suit more experienced divers. Water is warm year-round. Channel diving is timed to tide and current, so trips run to the conditions rather than the clock.
Getting there & around
Yap is reached by air to Colonia on the United Island Hopper connecting Guam and Palau, so flights are limited and best booked early. Most divers stay at the harbourside dive resort in Colonia and dive from its boats, a short run to the manta channels and reef. Respect local custom: parts of Yap require permission to enter and photography of people and villages should be asked first. Bring cash and any specialist gear, as island supply is limited.

Yap Divers
OutfitterYap Divers is the original and most experienced dive operation on Yap, established in 1986 by Scuba Diving Hall of Fame pioneer Bill Acker and still family-run as part of the Manta Ray Bay Resort in Colonia. A PADI 5-Star facility and SSI Platinum dive centre, it runs a fleet of purpose-built boats to Yap's manta cleaning stations and reef walls. The resort's harbourside bar and restaurant is the Mnuw, a 170 foot Indonesian Phinisi schooner moored beside the dive dock.
