Scuba Diving in Speyside, Tobago
A small fishing village on Tobago's northeast coast, wrapped around a bay that looks out to Goat Island and Little Tobago. Nutrient-rich currents sweeping up from the South American mainland feed the reefs offshore, giving Speyside some of the Caribbean's richest coral, the largest known brain coral colony among it, and a reputation as the island's premier dive base.
Why here
Speyside is the best diving in Trinidad and Tobago and among the best in the southern Caribbean, and the reason is water. Currents carrying nutrients from the Orinoco and the Guyana Basin wash the reefs off this northeast corner of Tobago, feeding an unusually dense coral community and the filter feeders that follow it. The signature dive is Kelleston Drain, home to a brain coral more than three metres across, the largest recorded in the Caribbean, while Japanese Gardens off Goat Island is a shallow, sunlit sprawl of soft and hard coral. The same currents make this drift-diving country, where you fly along walls and pinnacles like The Sisters, and they bring in the big animals: manta rays cruise the sites off Little Tobago through the spring and summer, alongside reef sharks, turtles and shoaling fish. Dive sites sit five to fifteen minutes from shore, so days are relaxed, and because Speyside is far from the resort strip the reefs stay quiet.
Best months
Diving runs year round, with water warm enough for a shorty or 3mm suit. Visibility is generally best in the dry season from roughly January to May; the wetter second half of the year can push more river runoff into the water, though that same nutrient load is what makes the reefs so alive. Manta ray sightings build through the spring and early summer. Many sites carry current and are run as drift dives, so they suit divers with some experience, while sheltered spots like Japanese Gardens work for beginners and courses.
Getting there & around
Speyside is on Tobago's far northeast coast, about an hour and a half by road from Crown Point and the airport at the southwest tip, on a winding drive over the Main Ridge that is part of the appeal. Most divers stay in Speyside or nearby Charlotteville and dive with a village operator whose boats leave from a local jetty, reaching the sites in five to fifteen minutes. A rental car helps for the transfer and for exploring the northeast, though operators can arrange pickups.

Extra Divers Speyside
SchoolExtra Divers Speyside is a small dive centre at the Speyside Inn on Tobago's northeast coast, part of the international Extra Divers network and run by an English- and German-speaking team. It trains to SSI standards from beginner courses upward and runs a daily morning boat with two dives to the reefs around Goat Island, Little Tobago, The Sisters, Charlotteville and Pirates Bay. It stays deliberately small, diving the same manta and brain-coral sites that made Speyside famous.
Tobago Dive Experience
SchoolTobago Dive Experience is a PADI Five Star centre at 195 Windward Road in Speyside, on Tobago's northeast coast, with more than 35 years in the water. From its own dock it reaches 30 to 40 dive sites within about ten minutes by boat, including the drift dives around Little Tobago and Goat Island and the Kelleston Drain wall that holds the Caribbean's largest brain coral. It teaches the full PADI ladder from first-timer courses through Divemaster.
