Scuba Diving in Sao Tome
The larger of the two islands of the equatorial republic of Sao Tome and Principe, off the coast of Central Africa. Rainforest-clad volcanic peaks drop to cocoa estates, black-sand coves and a small colonial-era capital on a natural harbour, ringed by warm, clear Atlantic water that holds reefs, nesting turtles and passing whales.
Why here
Sao Tome is one of the last uncrowded dive destinations in the Atlantic, an equatorial island where you can have a reef to yourself. The water is warm all year and the volcanic coast drops straight into it, so dives run from shallow coral gardens to black-rock walls and pinnacles a short boat ride from the beach. The marine life is the draw: big schools of barracuda and jack, groupers, rays, moray eels, and the reef fish of the Gulf of Guinea, with green and hawksbill turtles common and the chance of dolphins on the surface run. Between roughly July and October humpback whales pass close inshore and are sometimes heard underwater. There is almost no dive traffic, so the sites are unspoilt and the operator can tailor the day to the conditions. For a diver who has ticked off the busy tropics, the appeal here is space, warm blue water and a coast almost nobody dives.
Best months
Diving is possible year-round in warm water of around 26 to 28 degrees. The clearest water and calmest sea usually come in the long dry gravana from June to September and again in a shorter dry spell from December to February; the main rains from March to May can cut visibility near river mouths. Currents are generally mild and most sites suit all levels, with deeper walls for experienced divers. Humpback whales pass between about July and October. Sites cluster along the east coast near Santana and around the southern islet of Ilheu das Rolas on the equator.
Getting there & around
The dive base is at Club Santana on the east coast, about 20 minutes from Sao Tome airport by taxi or hotel transfer; there are direct flights to the island from Lisbon and from Accra and Libreville. Book dives and courses ahead, as this is a single-operator island and boats run on demand rather than a fixed timetable. Bring your certification card and, if you can, your own computer and exposure suit, though rental gear is available. Nitrox is offered on site. Combine a diving stay with the island's chocolate estates and rainforest hikes.

Atlantic Diving Center
SchoolAtlantic Diving Center is a PADI dive centre based at Club Santana on Messias Alves beach, about twenty minutes from Sao Tome's airport on the island's east coast. It works the reefs, volcanic drop-offs and offshore islets of the warm equatorial Atlantic, teaching PADI courses from Open Water through Advanced and Nitrox and guiding boat fun-dives and snorkelling trips. Its shore base has a training pool, classroom and compressor, and it operates in English, Portuguese and French.
