Why here
Pohnpei offers some of the least-crowded diving in Micronesia, wrapped around one of the wettest, greenest islands in the Pacific. A wide barrier reef encircles the island with dozens of passes, and inside and outside them you find sheer coral walls, deep channels and colourful gardens rather than the wreck history of Chuuk to the west. Reef sharks patrol the passes, big schools of trevally and barracuda stack up in the current, and Pohnpei has its own resident manta cleaning station where the rays come in to be groomed. Because almost no one dives here, the reef is healthy and the boats are quiet. Pohnpei also pairs diving with rare land adventures: the surf breaks that made the island a cult name, waterfalls in the jungle interior, and Nan Madol, the vast basalt ruined city offshore. It is a diver's island for people who want reef, solitude and a genuine sense of the frontier.
Best months
Diving runs year-round in warm water, with pass and channel dives timed to the tide and current, which can be strong and suit divers comfortable with drift; lagoon and inner-reef sites are calmer for newer divers. Pohnpei is very wet, so rain is likely in any month and visibility is best on incoming tides. The resident manta station and shark-filled passes are the signature dives.
Getting there & around
Pohnpei is reached by air to Kolonia on the United Island Hopper linking Guam, Chuuk, Honolulu and Majuro. Most divers base near Kolonia and dive from a lagoon-front operator with its own dock, a short boat run to the reef passes. The island interior is rugged and rainy, so plan around weather and keep the schedule flexible. Bring cash and any specialist gear, as supply is limited on the island.
