Majuro is the everyday diving of the Marshall Islands, the reachable counterpoint to Bikini's technical pilgrimage. The capital atoll rings a huge lagoon, and just outside it the reef falls away into clear, warm ocean, with visibility over 30 metres and water around 29 degrees year-round. Divers come for the outer-reef walls and passes, coral gardens on the lagoon side, a scatter of WWII wrecks from the atoll's wartime role, and reliable numbers of grey reef and other sharks patrolling the drop-offs. Because so few divers reach this corner of the Pacific, the sites are quiet and the reef is in good health. Majuro is also the practical launch point for the Marshalls: it is where you fly in, find the country's established dive operator, and can arrange onward technical trips to Bikini. For a diver who wants big ocean, sharks and wrecks without crowds, this is a properly off-the-map base.
Best months
Diving is possible year-round with warm water around 29 degrees and visibility often past 30 metres. Outer-reef and pass dives can carry current and suit divers comfortable with drift, while the lagoon side offers calmer coral for all levels. Sharks are a regular feature of the outer walls. Conditions are most settled outside the wetter months; boat access depends on wind, so keep the schedule flexible.
Getting there & around
Majuro is reached by air on the United Island Hopper via Guam and Honolulu, or via Fiji, so flights are limited and worth booking early. The atoll's single road runs the length of the islets, with hotels and the dive operator in Majuro town (Delap-Uliga-Djarrit). Diving is boat-based on the lagoon and outer reef; arrange it ahead, as there is one established operator. Bring cash and any specialist gear, as supply is limited.
