Bonito's limestone plateau filters rainwater into rivers and sinkholes of near-perfect clarity, and Lagoa Misteriosa is the showpiece: a flooded karst shaft more than 75 meters deep where visibility can reach 60 meters, an inland dive that feels like flying. The same reserve runs the Rio da Prata, a two-kilometer drift snorkel among dourado and piraputanga, so one property covers the whole spectrum from discovery float to deep certification dive. Bonito also invented Brazil's regulated-ecotourism model: every site has a fixed daily quota and a mandatory guide, so the water never crowds. Freshwater diving at this clarity and scale does not exist anywhere else in the Americas.
Best months
April through September is the clear window; summer rain and plankton soften visibility from October. The sinkhole holds around 22 to 24 C, suits provided. Certification cards are checked for the deeper platforms; discovery dives cover the shallows.
Getting there & around
Fly to Bonito (BYO), or Campo Grande (CGR) plus a 3.5-hour drive. Every attraction is quota-limited and must be pre-booked through a licensed agency; reserve two to four weeks ahead for July and Brazilian holidays.
