Scuba Diving in Basseterre
The capital and cruise port of Saint Kitts on the island's south coast, the base for its dive fleet at Port Zante and nearby Frigate Bay, with reef, wreck and shark dives a short boat run offshore and the calm channel toward Nevis on the doorstep.
Why here
Saint Kitts sits on the edge of a wide, sheltered channel between it and Nevis, and Basseterre is where the island's dive boats leave from. The diving is a mix of easy coral reefs, drop-offs along the island shelf, and a set of shipwrecks close to the capital, including the freighter River Taw and other hulls that now sit as artificial reefs full of fish. Because the water on the leeward side is calm for much of the year, the sites suit newer divers learning to certify as much as they suit divers who want relaxed reef and wreck dives without long crossings. Resident life includes turtles, southern stingrays, nurse sharks and the occasional reef shark, and the two long-running operators here run small boats and keep groups tight. For a Caribbean dive base that is quiet, walkable from the cruise pier, and a short ride from Frigate Bay, Basseterre is the pick.
Best months
Diving runs all year, with the calmest seas and best visibility usually from about April to August. The leeward south and west coasts stay diveable in most conditions, while the exposed Atlantic side is weather dependent. Sites range from shallow reef and wreck dives in the teens of metres, good for beginners and snorkellers, down to deeper drop-offs. Winter swells and the occasional passing system can stir the surface and cut some crossings.
Getting there & around
Both dive shops are in the Basseterre area, one at the Port Zante marina beside the cruise dock and one in Frigate Bay a few minutes away, so most divers stay near the capital or Frigate Bay and are picked up dockside. Book directly with the operators, which run small boats and can take you from an intro dive through to certification. Flights arrive at Basseterre's Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw airport, a short drive from the port.

Kenneth's Dive Centre
