Rock Climbing in Noravank

Armenia · Western Asia

A red limestone canyon in Vayots Dzor with Armenia's most developed crag under a thirteenth-century monastery.

$ BudgetLow crowdsModerate logistics

Why here

The Noravank and Gnishik canyon is Armenia's most developed crag: around sixty-six documented routes from 5a to 8a across sport, trad, and multipitch lines on red limestone, climbed under the gaze of the thirteenth-century Noravank monastery at the canyon head. The national climbing organization maintains the standard topos, updated in 2020, and runs guides and instruction, while Hell's Canyon on the Goris road adds another thirty routes for a second venue day. Climbing in Vayots Dzor pairs naturally with the Areni wine cellars ten minutes down the canyon, a crag-and-cellar combination few countries can match.

April to June and September to October; summer canyon heat pushes climbing to morning shade. Routes suit everyone from first-timers on guided top-ropes to 8a projects. Helmets matter, the limestone sheds.
