Rock Climbing in MeteoraGR
Monastery-topped conglomerate towers over Kalampaka: 900 multi-pitch routes on pebble-studded rock that exists at this scale almost nowhere else on earth.
Why here
Meteora is the other Greek climbing, and it could not be less like Kalymnos: where the island is sun-soaked sport limestone, Meteora is adventure multi-pitch on surreal conglomerate towers, pebble-studded rock climbed since the 1970s German pioneers, with runout bolting, summit registers, and monasteries watching from the tops. Around 900 routes thread the UNESCO World Heritage pillars, and the exposure is the point: you top out on a freestanding tower above the Thessalian plain while the tourist crowds queue for the monasteries below, oblivious. Local IFMGA guides make the style accessible to strong sport climbers making the jump to adventure terrain.
Best months
Early May to mid-June and October to mid-November are the seasons; summer bakes the towers. The bolting is spaced in the old style, so climb a grade below your limit or hire the guide who knows which classics protect well.
Getting there & around
Direct train from Athens to Kalampaka in about four hours, or drive from Thessaloniki; the village of Kastraki is the climbing base. Book guides two to six weeks ahead for the spring and autumn windows.
