Rock Climbing in KalymnosGR
Small Greek island in the Dodecanese with a single village, a harbour lined with fishing boats, and 3,000+ bolted sport climbing routes on sun-washed limestone. Kalymnos has no other industry — the island exists for climbing.
Why here
The self-proclaimed capital of sport climbing, Kalymnos offers 3,000+ bolted routes on sun-baked limestone above the Aegean. The island is purpose-built for climbing life — routes are a 10-minute walk from Masouri village, every taverna caters to climbers, and the route density across sectors like Odyssey, Arhi, and Grande Grotta makes it Europe's highest-mileage climbing destination. You can arrive with no plan and find exceptional climbing at any grade.
Best months
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) are ideal — warm enough to grip, cool enough to climb all day. July and August are hot; many strong climbers start at dawn and retreat by noon. The limestone grips best between 15–25°C. Routes dry quickly after rain. Winter is quiet and mild but some sectors sit in shadow.
Getting there & around
Fly to Kos (45 minutes from Athens), then take the ferry to Kalymnos — about 1 hour. Masouri is the climbing hub; most accommodation is walking distance from major sectors. A scooter or hire car helps for outlying crags. The island can be reached in under 4 hours door-to-wall from most European cities.
