A remote canyon system in the Balkan region of western Turkmenistan, near the Caspian coast, whose name means fiery fortress. Bands of white, pink and deep red limestone, an ancient Tethys seabed lifted and eroded into cliffs and mesas, run for tens of kilometres. It is one of the country's most dramatic landscapes and is reached by a long desert drive from Turkmenbashi or Ashgabat.

Yangykala is the most photogenic landscape in Turkmenistan and one of the least visited, a canyon system in the far west whose name means fiery fortress. Its cliffs and flat-topped mesas are banded in white, pink and deep rust red, the exposed floor of the ancient Tethys sea lifted and cut into ridges that run for tens of kilometres. The colour shifts through the day and catches fire at sunrise and sunset, which is when photographers position on the rim, and the scale is hard to convey until you stand at the edge of a drop with nothing built in any direction. There is no town, no fence and no signage, so trips come out with a 4x4 and camp on the plateau. The nearby Gozly Ata shrine and the Caspian coast are often folded into the same route across the Balkan desert.
Best months
Yangykala is remote and exposed, so spring and autumn are the workable seasons; summer is dangerously hot and winter winds are severe. The best light is at either end of the day, which means camping on the plateau to catch both sunset and sunrise. Access is a long drive over desert track from Turkmenbashi or Balkanabat, with no fuel, water or phone signal at the canyon, so trips are fully self-supported by 4x4. Bring layers for cold nights, sturdy footwear for the rim, and plenty of memory and battery for the golden hours.

US State Dept Level 1 Exercise Normal Precautions (as of 2026-07), but Turkmenistan is a tightly controlled state where independent tourism is not permitted; a Letter of Invitation, a state-registered guide and a fixed itinerary are mandatory and travel is only possible through a licensed local operator. Yangykala is a full day from Ashgabat and is usually reached via Turkmenbashi on the Caspian, so it is best built into a multi-day western loop. Your operator supplies the 4x4, camping kit, water and permits. Bring cash in US dollars, warm layers for the night and sun protection.
