Photography Expeditions in Tozeur

Tunisia · Northern Africa

Tozeur, a date-palm oasis on the rim of the Chott el Jerid salt lake in southwest Tunisia, is the base for the region's most photogenic desert: mountain oases at Chebika and Tamerza, the shimmering salt crust of the chott, and the Star Wars film sets at Mos Espa and Ong Jemel.

Why here

Tozeur sits on the edge of the Chott el Jerid, a vast salt lake that flashes white, pink and mirage-blue under the sun, and it is the base for the most photographic corner of the Tunisian Sahara. Within a short drive are the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides, palm-filled gorges and waterfalls tucked under bare ochre cliffs, and the old ksar villages above them. The dunes near Nefta and Ong Jemel hold the Star Wars film sets: the sculpted mud buildings of Mos Espa, still standing in the sand, and the ridge at Ong Jemel used as the exterior of Luke Skywalker's home world. Add the golden light on Tozeur's own brick-patterned old town and palm groves, and a single expedition covers salt flat, oasis, canyon, dunes and film history. Reputable guides keep to the established southwest circuit and avoid the remote border areas to the west and south.

Best months

The cool season from October to April is the time to come, with clear light, comfortable daytime temperatures and cold nights good for star fields; summer is harsh and hazy. The best colour on the Chott el Jerid comes at sunrise and late afternoon, when the salt and mirages turn pink and gold. The mountain oases hold water and greenery best after the winter rains. Light changes fast around midday, so shoots are built around the early and late hours.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Tozeur has a small airport with flights from Tunis and seasonal international links, and is about two hours by road from Douz. The oases, chott and film sets are spread over a wide area on rough tracks, so a 4x4 with a local driver-guide is the practical way to reach them at the right hours for light. Private guiding lets you time sunrise on the chott and sunset at the dunes; book ahead in the winter high season.

Ali Touareg

Guide

Ali Touareg is a local Tozeur guide running small private tours of one to six people through the mountain oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides, the palm groves around Tozeur, the salt flat of Chott el Jerid and the Star Wars film sets at Mos Espa and Ong Jemel. Multi-day trips add camel trekking and desert camps deeper in the Sahara. He works only from the south and does not pick up from northern cities, keeping groups small and itineraries flexible around the best light.
