Photography Expeditions in MerzougaMA
A village on the edge of Erg Chebbi, the great dune sea of southeastern Morocco, where 150-metre sand mountains shift color from rose to copper to deep red through the day. The most accessible true Saharan landscape anywhere.
Why here
Erg Chebbi is the Sahara photographers picture: sculpted dunes rising 150 metres, camel trains threading ridgelines at golden hour, and Bortle-1 night skies that turn the Milky Way into a subject rather than a backdrop. What makes Merzouga the working choice over deeper deserts is access without compromise, paved roads to the dune edge, camps inside the erg that put you on the sand for both golden hours and the stars between, and camel or 4x4 logistics that reposition you as the light moves. The dunes redraw themselves with every wind; nobody photographs the same erg twice.
Best months
October through April is the season: bearable days, cold clear nights, and the cleanest light; summer exceeds 45C and empties the camps. New-moon weeks are prime for astrophotography, full-moon nights for lit-dune landscapes, so choose the lunar phase to match the shot. Wind can lift sand any month, protect gear and treat a storm as a subject.
Getting there & around
Fly into Errachidia (ERH) via Casablanca and drive two hours, or make the classic ten-hour overland run from Marrakech through the Draa and Ziz valleys, itself a photo route. Book an in-erg camp rather than a village hotel so sunrise is a walk, not a drive; camps arrange camels, sandboards, and 4x4 repositioning. Reserve new-moon dates in the October-April season well ahead.
