Mashatu, in Botswana's south-eastern Tuli Block, is built for photographers. The private reserve sits where the Limpopo and Shashe rivers meet, holds the largest elephant herds on private land in Southern Africa, and has some of the region's most reliable leopard sightings, but its real signature is a set of underground photographic hides. Sunk at a waterhole so the lens sits at ground level, the hides deliver a worm's-eye view of elephant, lion, leopard and eland coming to drink, and of the smaller stuff, sandgrouse, doves and jackals, at eye height. The Matebole hide that opened in 2012 was the first of its kind in Southern Africa. Custom photographic vehicles and a dedicated night hide extend the shooting around the clock.
Best months
The dry season from May to October is prime, when sparse vegetation and concentrated water bring animals to the hides in numbers and the elephant herds move on daily routes past the waterholes. The hides and photographic vehicles run year-round, and the green season adds newborn game, migrant birds and dramatic light from November to March. Hide sessions are timed to the light and the animals' drinking patterns, morning and late afternoon. Bring a long lens and a fast body for the low-light hide work.
Getting there & around
Mashatu is reached via the Pont Drift border post from South Africa, with a road transfer into the reserve, or by charter flight; it is more accessible and less expensive than the fly-in camps of the north. Photographic hide sessions and the custom photo vehicles are booked as part of a stay or a dedicated photo package, and hide places are limited, so reserve ahead. Long lenses matter here; operators can advise on gear and often provide beanbag supports in the hides.
