Photography Expeditions in Lencois MaranhensesBR

A 155,000-hectare field of white coastal dunes in Maranhao that fills with thousands of turquoise rainwater lagoons for a few months each year. UNESCO listed in 2024, and unlike anywhere else on earth.

Why here

For a few months a year, rain turns this dune field into thousands of paired turquoise lagoons between white sand ridges, a landscape with no analogue anywhere, and by October it is evaporating away. That impermanence is the photographic point: the shot exists only in a seasonal window, at its best in June when the rains have finished and the water is at full depth. Golden-hour ridgelines, swimmers in the lagoons shot from the air, and some of Brazil's darkest night skies reward photographers who commit to the awkward journey, and UNESCO's 2024 listing confirmed what drone reels had been arguing for a decade.

The lagoons fill through the January to June rains and hold full from June through September; from October they shrink fast and the spectacle fades. Heat is constant; shoot early and late and sit out the midday glare like the local guides do.
