Why here
Ilulissat is the great photographer's town of Greenland, sitting where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier pours into the sea and packs the fjord mouth with icebergs the size of buildings. Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest and most productive glaciers on Earth, and its ice fills the Ilulissat Icefjord, listed by UNESCO in 2004. You shoot the ice three ways: on foot along the Sermermiut boardwalk trails where bergs drift past the old Inuit settlement, from a boat cruising slowly among the giants, and under the midnight sun, when late-night light in June and July turns the ice pink and gold and there is no need to chase sunset. Whales, seals and Arctic light complete the frame. This is a place you shoot with local skippers who read the ice and know where the bergs are grounding.
Best months
The classic season runs from June to September, when the fjord is ice-free enough for boats and the midnight sun keeps the light going almost around the clock in June and July. Boat cruises typically operate from April to October. Even in summer the water is near freezing and weather shifts fast, so pack for wind and spray. Late-evening sailings are best for low golden light on the ice.
Getting there & around
Ilulissat has an airport with flights from Kangerlussuaq and Nuuk, and no roads connect it to other towns, so everything arrives by air or sea. The Sermermiut and Icefjord boardwalk trailheads are a short walk or drive from the centre. Book boat cruises and any midnight-sun sailings ahead in high summer, dress in windproof layers for open-boat cold, and protect gear from salt spray.

OutfitterWorld of Greenland is a Greenlandic-owned operator based in Ilulissat, with a local CVR and taxes paid in Avannaata Municipality. It runs Glacier Lodge Eqi and the historic Ilimanaq Lodge and is one of the few Ilulissat operators open year-round, arranging Icefjord boat cruises, hikes, cultural tours and helicopter flights. It hires locally and takes interns from the Greenlandic tourism school Campus Kujalleq.
