Photography Expeditions in Cano CristalesCO

A river in the Serrania de la Macarena that blooms into bands of red, pink, yellow, green, and blue for a few months each year, when an endemic aquatic plant flowers. Widely called the most beautiful river in the world.

Why here

For roughly five months a year, the Macarenia clavigera plant carpeting Cano Cristales' riverbed flowers crimson, and the river turns into moving stained glass: red streamers under clear water, gold sandbars, black rock, green moss, all shifting with the light. It happens nowhere else on earth. Access is deliberately controlled, guided groups only, capped numbers, no sunscreen or repellent in the water, which keeps both the plant and the photographs pristine. The gateway town of La Macarena is tiny, the walks between pools are hot, and every serious landscape photographer's list has this river on it for a reason.

Best months

The river shows color from roughly mid-June through November, driven by water levels: too high and the plants drown dark, too low and they dry out. September and October are usually the peak saturation window. The park closes entirely outside the season. Midday sun overexposes the reds; guides time the best pools for morning and late-afternoon light.

Getting there & around

Complex logistics

Fly to La Macarena's airstrip via Villavicencio (daily small aircraft) or seasonal direct flights from Bogota and Medellin, which run only during the color season and sell out. Visits are guided-only under park rules, arranged as two-to-four-day packages with local operators; no sunscreen or insect repellent is allowed in the river, so plan sleeves and hats instead. Book flights and tours together a month or more ahead for September-October.
