Douz, the palm-fringed oasis on the northern edge of the Grand Erg Oriental in Kebili governorate, is Tunisia's gateway to the Sahara, the launch point for camel treks and 4x4 expeditions into the dunes and the home of the country's oldest desert festival each December.
Why here
Douz is Tunisia's gateway to the Sahara, the last real town before the Grand Erg Oriental, the vast sand sea that runs on into Algeria. Its palm grove gives way within a few kilometres to open dunes, which makes it the classic launch point for desert expeditions: multi-day 4x4 crossings, camel treks with nomad guides, and overnight bivouacs under some of the darkest skies in North Africa. Routes head for landmarks like the isolated hot-spring oasis of Ksar Ghilane on the edge of the erg, the Tembaine dune fields, and the ruined desert ksour, with camps set up among the dunes for the night. The town has been a caravan and market hub for the Mrazig nomads for generations, and the desert culture is still living rather than staged. Reputable operators keep to the established southern circuits and steer clear of the remote Algeria and Libya border zones.
Best months
The desert season runs from about October to April, when daytime temperatures are comfortable and nights are cold and clear. Summer is dangerously hot and most operators pause deep-desert trips from June to August. There is no fuel, water or reliable phone signal across much of the erg, so expeditions run self-supported with a guide who knows the tracks and wells. Soft sand and shifting dunes mean 4x4 travel and camel pace, not ordinary driving, and sudden wind can raise sand and erase tracks.
Getting there & around
Douz is reached by road, roughly two hours from Tozeur or its airport and about four to five hours from Djerba. Trips run as guided expeditions of a day up to a week, with operators supplying 4x4 vehicles or camels, a driver-guide, camping kit and food. Because the interior has no fuel, water or coverage, self-driving into the erg is not advised. Keep to reputable local operators and the established desert circuits, and avoid the far-south and far-west border areas with Libya and Algeria.

It works directly with travellers rather than through booking platforms, setting rates per person per day with reductions for longer treks.
