Overlanding / Expedition Driving in MarrakechMA
Morocco's most visited city, at the foot of the High Atlas. The Djemaa el-Fna square and the medina are the tourist core, but Marrakech is also the primary staging point for Atlas mountain motorcycle circuits and southern Sahara overland routes.
Why here
Morocco's southern routes offer one of the most accessible genuine desert overland experiences in the world. From Marrakech the route over the High Atlas drops into the Draa Valley, passes the kasbahs at Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, and continues into the Sahara at Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. The piste roads south of Ouarzazate are graded and manageable in a competent 4x4 with moderate off-road experience. For more serious terrain, Foum Zguid and the Chegaga dunes to the west involve real sand navigation. The whole circuit from Marrakech and back can be done in a week; two weeks gives time to explore properly.
Best months
March through May and September through November are the best windows. July and August are genuinely dangerous in the south; temperatures regularly exceed 45C and heat-related mechanical failures are common. Winter brings snow on Atlas passes and cold desert nights. Spring can bring flash flooding in oued (dry riverbed) crossings; check conditions locally. The paved roads south of the Atlas are in reasonable condition; piste tracks vary from graded gravel to deep sand.
Getting there & around
Fly into Marrakech Menara (RAK) or Casablanca (CMN). 4x4 rentals are available in Marrakech; quality varies significantly, so inspect the vehicle thoroughly and confirm spare tire, recovery equipment, and documentation are all present. Bringing your own vehicle via ferry from Algeciras is popular among European overlanders. Moroccan third-party insurance is mandatory and available at the border. Main tourist piste routes are reasonably well signed; harder Saharan tracks require GPS, proper route planning, and ideally local guide support. Fuel widely available in towns; carry extra for remote sections.
