Mangystau is one of the strangest landscapes in Central Asia, a desert region on the Caspian coast where tens of millions of years of erosion on the old Tethys sea floor have carved chalk cliffs, tabletop plateaus and whole valleys of odd forms. The headline sights are Boszhira, a valley of white peaks and fangs rising from the plain, the Torysh field of giant spherical stone balls, the Tuzbair salt flat, and underground mosques cut into limestone at pilgrimage sites like Beket-Ata. There are almost no roads and no phone signal across much of it, so this is expedition driving: long days in a four-wheel-drive convoy on unmarked tracks, camping out under very dark skies. Aktau on the coast is the staging city.
Best months
Spring and autumn, roughly April to May and September to October, are the comfortable windows, with daytime temperatures around 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Summer is fiercely hot and exposed, winter cold and windy. There is little to no mobile coverage, no fuel and no water across the interior, so trips run self-supported with a guide who knows the tracks. Sudden rain can turn clay surfaces impassable. Some sites, notably the underground mosques, are active places of pilgrimage.
Getting there & around
Trips start from Aktau, which has an airport with domestic and some international flights, and run as guided four-wheel-drive expeditions of two to eight days into the desert. Because the interior has no fuel, water or reliable signal, self-driving is not advised and most travellers join an outfitter that supplies vehicles, a driver-guide, camping kit and food. Distances between sights are large, so days are long and itineraries are built around fuel and camp points.
