Overlanding / Expedition Driving in Khor Al Adaid
The Inland Sea in Qatar's far south-east, a tidal arm of the Gulf that reaches deep into the dunes near the Saudi border, reachable only by four-wheel drive across the sand. A UNESCO-recognized natural reserve, Khor Al Adaid is the country's great desert landscape of shifting barchan dunes meeting the sea.

Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, is one of the few places on earth where the sea flows into the heart of a dune desert, and reaching it is half the point. The tidal lagoon sits about 80 kilometers south of Doha near the Saudi border, with no road in: the only way across is by four-wheel drive over towering barchan dunes, a drive that operators turn into a proper desert crossing, dropping tire pressures and carving down the slip faces of the big dunes before the sand opens onto the still water of the khor. A UNESCO-recognized natural reserve, it draws flamingos and wading birds to its shallows and Arabian oryx and gazelle to the surrounding sands. Most trips run as a half or full day, but the best is an overnight in a desert camp, watching the dunes go pink at sunset and the stars come out over the water. It is Qatar's signature wild landscape, and a genuine bit of expedition driving within an hour of the capital.
Best months
The desert season runs from October to April, when daytime heat is manageable and nights by the water are cool enough for a fire; from May to September the heat is extreme and midday driving is punishing. The dunes shift constantly and the tides move the shoreline, which is exactly why a guide with a proper vehicle and recovery gear is essential, this is not a place for an unsupported rental car. Mornings and late afternoons give the best light and firmer sand.

US State Dept Level 3 Reconsider Travel (as of 2026-07), heightened regional tensions after the February 2026 US-Iran hostilities, with periodic Gulf airspace closures and flight disruptions; check your government's current advisory before booking. Khor Al Adaid has no road access and must be reached by guided four-wheel drive, so go with an operator rather than self-drive; pickups are from Doha hotels, about a 90-minute run south. Choose between a half day, a full day with lunch at a desert camp, or an overnight. Bring sun protection, a warm layer for the evening and closed shoes for the dunes. Hamad International Airport is about an hour from the city.
