The capital of the self-declared republic of Somaliland, a highland city rebuilt after the war of the late 1980s. It is the base for travel across the territory, with a busy livestock and money-changer market, the MiG war memorial, and road access out to the Laas Geel rock art and the Gulf of Aden coast at Berbera.
Why here
Somaliland is one of the few places left where overland travel still feels like exploration rather than a set route. From Hargeisa you can string together a self-contained 4x4 circuit that most of the world has never seen: out to the Laas Geel rock art, on to the Ottoman and colonial port of Berbera on the Gulf of Aden, up into the Golis mountains and the juniper forest around Daallo, and back through country grazed by camel herders. Roads are rough, fuel and water need planning, and a permit and armed escort travel with you, which is part of what makes it an expedition. You move with a local driver-guide who knows the checkpoints and the towns, sleep in simple guesthouses, and the payoff is a corner of the Horn of Africa with almost no other travelers and a genuine welcome in the market towns.
Best months
The dry seasons, roughly November to February and again June to August, give the firmest roads and the most reliable travel; the rains around April and May and again in October can cut tracks. Distances are long and surfaces are mixed tar and graded dirt, so days on the road are slow. Vehicles, fuel range, water and permits all need arranging in advance through an operator. Accommodation outside Hargeisa and Berbera is basic, and cash is essential as cards are not usable.

US State Dept Level 4 Do Not Travel for Somalia as a whole, renewed 21 May 2026; UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the western regions of Somaliland, including Hargeisa and Berbera, and against all travel to the rest of Somalia (as of 2026-07). Somaliland is the stable northwest, but the warnings stand and consular help is not available on the ground. Travel only with an established local operator. Foreigners need a Somaliland visa, plus travel permits and, on many roads, an armed police escort, all arranged by the operator. Move in daylight, carry US dollars and local shillings in cash, and keep the itinerary flexible for checkpoints and weather.
