The Hibiscus Festival is Fiji's oldest and largest festival, and for a week at the end of the dry season it takes over Suva. It began in 1956 as a one night event staged by the city's Junior Chamber of Commerce and grew into a week-long carnival that fills Albert Park in the centre of the capital. The heart of it is the float parade through the streets and the Miss Hibiscus pageant, wrapped around a marketplace of cultural food villages and craft stalls, a live entertainment hub, sporting competitions and city-wide events. It is a civic festival rather than a ticketed show, run by a volunteer events group backed by the Suva City Council, so you experience it by walking into the park and the streets and joining the crowd. The 2026 edition marks the festival's seventieth year and returns the event to its original home at Albert Park.

A week-long festival held in the late dry season, typically at the end of August into early September, centred on Albert Park in downtown Suva. Suva is the wettest part of Fiji, so rain showers are possible even in the dry season; bring cover. Entry to the grounds is low cost and most street events are free, with paid tickets only for set-piece events such as the crowning ball.

Suva is on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, about a four hour drive or a short domestic flight from Nadi, and the festival grounds at Albert Park sit in the city centre within walking distance of downtown hotels. No booking is needed to attend the park and street events; only specific ticketed functions such as the pageant crowning night are sold separately. Accommodation in Suva fills during the festival week, so book ahead.
