Crop Over
Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and its historic port, set around the Careenage inlet on the south-west coast. The old town and its garrison are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with British colonial streets, the Parliament Buildings and Broad Street's shops. It is the island's commercial and cultural hub, home to the Mount Gay rum visitor centre, and the finishing point each August for the Grand Kadooment parade of the Crop Over festival.

Why here
Crop Over is Barbados's national festival and one of the great carnivals of the Caribbean, and Bridgetown is its stage. It began in the 1600s as the celebration that marked the end of the sugar-cane harvest, faded with the decline of the plantations, and was revived in 1974 into a summer-long season of Bajan music, art and masquerade. The calendar builds from late June through July with calypso and soca competitions, the Pic-O-De-Crop monarch finals and the Cohobblopot show, then peaks in early August. It opens with Foreday Morning, a pre-dawn street jump where crowds cover themselves in paint and mud behind the music trucks, and climaxes on Grand Kadooment Day, when costumed bands parade from the National Stadium through the streets and finish on Spring Garden Highway. The National Cultural Foundation frames Crop Over as the meeting of the island's British and West African heritage, and Rihanna, a Bajan, has returned to play mas in her home carnival. You can watch from the roadside or register with a band and cross the road in costume yourself.
Best months
The festival runs from late June to early August, in the warm, humid wet season, so expect heat and passing showers on the parade days; the events run whatever the weather. Grand Kadooment falls on the first Monday of August, a public holiday, with Foreday Morning in the small hours a couple of days before. The parade days are long and hot with a lot of standing and walking in the sun, so carry water and sun protection. Foreday Morning is a paint-and-mud affair, so wear clothes and shoes you are happy to ruin.
Getting there & around
The season's events spread across Bridgetown and the south coast, with the finale centred on the National Stadium and Spring Garden Highway, a short drive from the south and west-coast hotels. July and early August are peak season, so book flights and accommodation well ahead. To join the parade you buy a costume package from a masquerade band in advance, which covers your costume, road drinks and security; watching from the roadside is free. Roads close around the route and traffic is heavy on the two main days, so plan on taxis and extra time.
