Owru Yari
The capital of Suriname and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of wooden Dutch colonial architecture on the Suriname River. Each 1 July it becomes the centre of Keti Koti, the national commemoration of the 1863 abolition of slavery, with parades in kotomisi dress, drumming and ceremony at Fort Zeelandia and the Kwakoe emancipation monument.

Owru Yari, the Surinamese way of seeing out the old year, turns downtown Paramaribo into the loudest street party in the region, and its signature is pure spectacle. Through the day on 31 December the wooden inner city fills with music, food stalls and crowds, building to the Pagara Estafette, a relay in which business after business lights giant garlands of red firecrackers, the pagara, some strings running up to two kilometres long. The bangs are deafening and continuous, the smoke drifts thick over Domineestraat and the shopping streets, and the noise is meant to drive out the old year and its bad luck before midnight. It is a tradition rooted in the country's Chinese community that the whole of multi-ethnic Suriname has made its own, and standing in the crowd as a superstring rips down the street in a rolling wave of sound is one of the most Surinamese experiences a visitor can have. Around the firecrackers the day carries live kaseko and other music, cross-cultural performances and the reunion energy of a small country coming home, before the party rolls on into a new-year night.

Owru Yari happens every 31 December, with the street festivities and the Pagara Estafette running through the daytime and afternoon and the celebration continuing into New Year's Eve night. It centres on Domineestraat and the downtown shopping streets of Paramaribo. The firecracker noise is extreme at close range, so ear protection is sensible, and the crowds are dense; the drier late-year weather is usually kind. Much of it is free to watch from the street.
Getting there & around
The action is in the heart of Paramaribo, walkable from the city's hotels and guesthouses, so no special transport is needed beyond getting into the centre for the daytime pagara. Book accommodation well ahead for the year-end window, when the capital fills up. Come early to find a spot along Domineestraat, bring ear protection for the firecrackers, and expect road closures and thick crowds in the downtown core.

Owru Yari Fest
OrganizerOwru Yari Fest is the organised programme behind the Old Year celebrations in downtown Paramaribo on 31 December, staging live music and street entertainment through the day. Its centrepiece is the Pagara Estafette, a relay of firecracker garlands ending with a giant pagara, a superstring up to two kilometres long, set off in the shopping streets to drive out the old year in a wall of noise and smoke. It fills Domineestraat with crowds, food stalls and cross-cultural performances.
