Why here

AfroFuture is Ghana's flagship Afrobeats festival and the headline act of 'Detty December', the year-end wave of parties that pulls the diaspora back to Accra. Launched in 2017 as Afrochella by two Ghanaian-Americans and rebranded AfroFuture in 2023, it fills two days each late December with a main-stage line-up of African and diaspora artists alongside art installations, a food and craft market, fashion and design showcases. Crowds run well over ten thousand, and the festival has become a fixture of the city's December calendar next to Afro Nation, concerts and club nights that keep Accra awake until dawn. It is a celebration of African creativity staged on African soil, deliberately built by returnees who wanted the party at home. For a first-timer it is the loudest, most joyful window into contemporary Ghanaian and pan-African youth culture.

AfroFuture is held over two days in late December, usually in the last week of the month, at the peak of the Detty December season. Late December is dry and hot in Accra, with the dusty Harmattan haze sometimes drifting down from the north. Dates and the exact venue are confirmed by the organisers closer to the time. The wider festival, concert and nightlife programme runs across the whole month, so it pays to plan several nights.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Accra's Kotoka International Airport has direct flights from Europe, North America and across Africa, and December is the busiest travel month, so book flights and rooms early. Festival venues sit within the city and are reached by taxi or ride-hailing, and traffic is heavy over the holiday period. Tickets are sold online through the festival ahead of the dates.
