The beer tents are the center (each run by a different Munich brewery, each with its own character and regular crowd), but the experience extends to traditional Bavarian food, fairground rides, and the particular social energy of thousands of people in traditional dress sharing long tables. The authenticity of the Munich original compared to international imitations is significant — this is a genuinely local festival that happens to be open to the world.

16-17 days from mid-September to the first Sunday in October. Munich in late September is 15-20°C — warm enough by day, jacket weather by evening. Peak crowd weekends (the first two) are the most chaotic; weekday afternoons are considerably more manageable. Beer is served in one-liter Maßkrugs and only Munich breweries are permitted. The festival officially opens with the mayor tapping the first keg at noon on the opening Saturday.
Getting there & around
Munich airport connects to the city center by S-Bahn (40 minutes). The Theresienwiese is U-Bahn accessible from the city center (Theresienwiese station, one stop from the main station). Book accommodation 6+ months ahead — prices spike dramatically. Weekend tent reservations must be made directly with each tent operator, usually from January — walk-in is possible on weekday afternoons.
