Felabration is Lagos at its loudest, a week-long celebration of the music and politics of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti staged each October at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja. His daughter Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti conceived it in 1998, a year after his death, and it has grown into a fixture the Lagos State Government now recognises as an official tourist attraction. The programme runs live Afrobeat every night, led by Fela's sons Femi and Made Kuti and a rotating cast of Nigerian and international artists, alongside a debate symposium, art exhibitions, a dance competition and a street procession, building to Fela's birthday on 15 October. Lagos is reached through Murtala Muhammed International Airport, with direct flights from Europe, North America and across Africa. The New Afrika Shrine is in Ikeja on the mainland; use hotel cars or ride-hailing rather than driving yourself, and allow for heavy traffic. Lagos State is in the settled southwest of Nigeria, outside the Level 4 state warnings for the north, though the US State Department keeps an overall Level 3 Reconsider Travel advisory on Nigeria (as of 2026-07).
