Music at the Source in Santiago de CubaCU

Cuba's second city and the place where son was born — less visited than Havana, rawer, and closer to the African roots of Cuba's music, especially during its July carnival, the most authentic in the Caribbean.

Why here

Son was born here, not in Havana — the eastern Cuban city has a distinctly African musical character shaped by proximity to Haiti and Jamaica. The Casa de la Trova on Calle Heredia is the most authentic trova venue in Cuba, where old musicians play for the love of it rather than for tourists. Fewer visitors, lower prices, and a rawness that Havana has partly traded away for international recognition.

November through April is most comfortable. July is the standout month — Santiago's Carnival (Festival del Caribe) is the largest and most authentic carnival in Cuba, drawing Afro-Cuban ritual music, conga, and comparsa street processions that dwarf Havana's version. Serious music travellers often plan their Cuba trip around July in Santiago.

Getting there & around

Complex logistics

Fly into Santiago's Antonio Maceo Airport (direct connections from Havana and some Caribbean destinations) or combine with a Havana trip by taking the overnight train (slow but authentic) or a short domestic flight. Santiago is walkable in its historic core. Same Cuba logistics apply: cash only, casas particulares recommended, US OFAC compliance required for American travellers.

Casa de la Trova

Guide

The most celebrated trova venue in Cuba, operating since 1968 on Calle Heredia in the historic centre of Santiago. Musicians gather here daily to perform son, bolero, and trova in an informal, intimate setting that has changed remarkably little in decades. Not a school in the conventional sense but a living cultural institution that offers direct access to Cuba's oldest musical tradition.

Casa del Caribe

School

An Afro-Cuban cultural research centre founded in 1982, dedicated to Caribbean culture and the African heritage at the root of Cuba's music. Casa del Caribe organises the annual Festival del Caribe in July, offers workshops in conga, son, salsa, and Afro-Cuban religious music, and provides one of the deepest access points in Cuba to the African-derived traditions underlying Santiago's distinctive sound.
