New York is the global capital of jazz — the Village Vanguard has hosted every major player since 1935, Jazz at Lincoln Center runs the most serious educational programming in the world, and the New School's jazz programme has trained generations of professionals. The density of talent means that any night of the week, multiple world-class musicians are playing within a few miles of each other.
Best months
Year-round — the clubs never close. June through August brings outdoor festivals (Celebrate Brooklyn, Lincoln Center Out of Doors) that add a free, accessible layer to the scene. JVC Jazz Festival and others fill the summer calendar. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable for city-going. Winter is cold but the indoor scene is at its most concentrated.
Getting there & around
Three major airports with global connections. Jazz venues cluster in the West Village, Harlem, and Lower East Side — all accessible by subway. Jazz at Lincoln Center is on the Upper West Side; the New School is in Greenwich Village. Accommodation is expensive; book well ahead and consider Brooklyn for better value. New York is premium cost across the board.

Jazz at Lincoln Center's education division runs the Jazz Academy, public workshops, master classes, and the annual Essentially Ellington festival — bringing students into contact with the organisation's resident orchestra and guest artists at the highest level. New York Jazz Workshop
SchoolA New York-based jazz education organisation with a long-standing collaboration with Smalls Jazz Club in the West Village. The New York Jazz Workshop runs master classes focused on specific aspects of jazz craft — rhythm, harmony, bebop vocabulary, composition — taught by working New York jazz musicians. Periodic workshops open to visiting students; private coaching also available.
