Music at the Source in HavanaCU
Cuba's capital and cultural nerve centre — a city of crumbling colonial grandeur where son, rumba, Afro-Cuban jazz, and trova coexist in a music scene largely unchanged by commercial pressures.
Why here
Havana's music scene is genuinely unlike anywhere else — partly because decades of isolation kept it from being commercialised in the usual way. Son, rumba, Afro-Cuban jazz, and trova coexist in a city where musicians are state-trained, technically accomplished, and available for workshops and sessions. The Callejón de Hamel brings Afro-Cuban rumba to the street every Sunday. Casa de la Música hosts the son scene nightly.
Best months
November through April is the dry season — the most comfortable time to visit, with pleasant temperatures and low humidity. July brings the Carnival de La Habana. The rainy season (May–October) is hot and humid but not prohibitive. There are no official best-months in the traditional sense — the music runs year-round, but dry-season visits are more comfortable.
Getting there & around
Cuba requires specific logistics: US travellers must comply with OFAC travel categories (people-to-people cultural exchange applies well to music immersion travel). Cash is essential — US credit and debit cards do not function in Cuba. Accommodation options have expanded with private casas particulares, which offer more authentic access than state hotels. Book ahead in high season. Internal transport is manageable within Havana by taxi or coco-taxi.
