The Old Town School of Folk Music is one of America's great community music institutions, offering workshops in blues, roots, and jazz to anyone who walks in. The city's jazz scene runs in parallel, with Green Mill and Andy's Jazz Club hosting serious players nightly.

April through October is the liveable window. June hosts the Chicago Blues Festival in Millennium Park — free, enormous, and authentic. Summer weekends are busy with outdoor festivals. Winter is genuinely brutal (January temperatures regularly below freezing) but the indoor club scene runs year-round for those who want it.
Getting there & around
O'Hare is one of the world's major hubs with connections everywhere. The L train connects the airport to the city centre. Old Town School is accessible by public transit. The South Side blues venues require a rideshare or rental car. Accommodation ranges from downtown hotels to neighbourhood stays in Logan Square or Wicker Park.

SchoolThe Blues Heaven Foundation preserves and promotes the legacy of Chicago blues from its base in the original Chess Records building on South Michigan Avenue — the studio where Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley recorded. Guided tours of the historic studio are the centrepiece, placing visitors directly in the room where the blues was amplified for the world.
Old Town School of Folk Music
SchoolFounded in 1957 and now Chicago's premier community music institution, the Old Town School offers more than 700 classes, workshops, and private lessons annually across guitar, banjo, blues, roots, jazz, and world music. Its adult program is specifically designed for learners at every level, including complete beginners. Single-session workshops make it ideal for visiting students.
