Music at the Source in BayreuthDE

The Franconian town where Wagner built an opera house for his own work, and where the Festspiele has performed almost nothing else since 1876.

Why here

No composer anywhere has a deeper claim to a place. Wagner designed the Festspielhaus himself, engineered its hidden orchestra pit and famous acoustics for his own scores, premiered the complete Ring there in 1876, and is buried in the garden of his villa down the hill. The Bayreuther Festspiele still performs Wagner and only Wagner every summer, run for generations by his descendants. Hearing Parsifal in the house it was written for is the most literal interpretation of music at the source that exists. The town itself is small, which concentrates the festival atmosphere: for five weeks Bayreuth is simply the center of the opera world.

The Festspiele runs late July to the end of August. Demand famously exceeded supply for decades, with waits of up to ten years; online sales have loosened access considerably, and returned tickets appear regularly, but plan a year ahead for a specific production. Performances start mid-afternoon with long intervals for dinner. The Festspielhaus is unheated and the hard seats are part of the initiation. Outside festival weeks Bayreuth is a quiet margravial town, worth a stop mainly for the Wagner museum and the UNESCO opera house.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Nuremberg, an hour away by car or direct regional train. Accommodation in town books out for festival weeks a year ahead, with surrounding Franconian villages as the overflow. Tickets sell only through the official Festspiele channels; resale promises are a known scam area. Pair the trip with the Frankenjura climbing region or Franconian beer country, both under an hour away, to make a week of it.

organizer

The festival Wagner founded to premiere the Ring in 1876, still performing exclusively his ten canonical operas in the Festspielhaus he designed. The covered orchestra pit and wooden auditorium produce an orchestral blend that exists nowhere else. Tickets sell through the official ticket shop with sales opening the preceding autumn.
