Motorcycle Adventure Touring in Upper MustangNP
The former Kingdom of Lo, closed to foreigners until 1992: trans-Himalayan desert riding to the walled city of Lo Manthang.
Why here
Upper Mustang is a Royal Enfield route through the former Kingdom of Lo, closed to foreigners until 1992 and still gated by a restricted-area permit that keeps traffic to a fraction of Ladakh's. The riding climbs past Muktinath toward the walled city of Lo Manthang across Tibetan-plateau desert, canyon ledges, and river crossings, and because Mustang sits in the trans-Himalayan rain shadow, it stays rideable through the early monsoon months that shut down the rest of Nepal. Tours run seven to twelve days with a support vehicle and mechanic, and the permit math (500 US dollars per ten days, minimum two riders, licensed guide) is part of what preserves the place.
Best months
April to June and September to November are the core windows, and the rain shadow keeps June and even monsoon-edge riding viable. Altitude tops out near 4,000m at the passes; acclimatization days are built into good itineraries. Off-road experience is required; this is not a first adventure ride.
Getting there & around
Tours stage from Pokhara. The restricted-area permit (USD 500 per 10 days) must be arranged through a registered operator, with a licensed guide and a minimum group of two; solo permits do not exist.
