Vietnam's capital and the gateway to the north. A dense, atmospheric city of lakes and street food, and the base for the Ha Giang Loop -- one of Southeast Asia's most celebrated motorcycle routes through the Dong Van Karst Plateau.

Why here

Northern Vietnam's Ha Giang province is the best motorcycle riding in Southeast Asia, and Hanoi is the gateway. The Ha Giang Loop through the Dong Van Karst Plateau crosses 1,500m passes, drops into gorges, and winds through minority hill tribe villages on roads that range from pristine asphalt to rough mountain track. You can cover the core circuit in four days, but most riders take seven to ten. Hanoi's Old Quarter has good rental shops stocking everything from 125cc semi-automatics for beginners to larger adventure bikes for experienced riders. The city itself is intense and worth a day each way.

November through April is the dry season for the north. Roads are clear, visibility is excellent, and temperatures are cool in the mountains (10-15C at altitude). Avoid May through October when monsoon rains turn unpaved sections into mud and some passes flood. The Ha Giang region sits at elevations reaching 2,000m; carry layers regardless of season. Petrol stations become sparse in the northern highlands; fill up at every opportunity.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Noi Bai International (HAN). Motorcycle rentals are widely available in the Old Quarter on Hang Bai street and surrounding blocks. An International Driving Permit plus a Vietnamese licence is technically required; enforcement is inconsistent on smaller bikes, more regular on 175cc and above. Most Western riders rent a semi-automatic 110cc for the Loop without issue. Self-drive is the norm, but several reputable guided companies operate out of Hanoi for those who want local navigation support. Budget accommodation is available throughout the Ha Giang circuit.
