Meditation / Vipassana in August

4 destinations in season, cheapest first.

Kandy

Sri Lanka
$ BudgetLow crowds

Sri Lanka is the oldest continuously Buddhist country on earth, and the hills around Kandy hold its accessible face for foreign practitioners: forest meditation centers above the tea lines where retreats follow the Theravada tradition, with silence, simple rooms, dana-based or near-free pricing, and teaching that emphasizes mindfulness and loving-kindness in daily life rather than achievement. Nilambe, perched above a tea plantation south of the city, has hosted foreign meditators for decades on short structured retreats, close enough to Kandy that the Temple of the Tooth and the sacred city sit an hour from your cushion. For a traveler weighing Indian ashrams and Thai wats, Sri Lanka's centers are the quieter, least commercial option of the three.

Plum Village

France
$ BudgetMedium crowds

Thich Nhat Hanh founded Plum Village in 1982 in the farming country of southwest France, and it has grown into the largest and most influential Buddhist monastery in the Western world. The Summer Opening (typically late June to mid-August) welcomes laypeople for one-week residential sessions with resident monks and nuns. The practice tradition is Zen but deeply shaped by Theravada mindfulness, and Thich Nhat Hanh's framing around interbeing and engaged Buddhism reaches people who never connected with traditional Buddhist language. This is a practice community in operation, not a retreat center built around guest comfort. The atmosphere is genuine.

Seoul

South Korea
$ BudgetLow crowds

Korea's Templestay program is one of the world's great structured meditation experiences: created by the Jogye Order for the 2002 World Cup and run since by its Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism, it opens working temples to overnight guests for Seon (Zen) meditation, dawn chanting, temple food, and conversation with monks, with English-language programs at more than 30 temples and over six million cumulative participants. Jogyesa, the order's flagship in downtown Seoul, anchors the program for travelers: you can step out of one of the world's most intense cities on a Friday and spend the weekend keeping monastic hours behind its walls. The contrast is the teaching.

Surat Thani

Thailand
$ BudgetLow crowds

Suan Mokkh is Southeast Asia's most storied silent-retreat institution: founded on the lineage of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, one of the twentieth century's most influential Theravada teachers, its International Dharma Hermitage has run a ten-day silent retreat starting on the first of every month, continuously, for decades. The format is the antithesis of wellness tourism: registration in person only, the day before the month begins, a 2,000-baht donation covering all ten days, 4 am wake-ups, concrete beds, noble silence, and anapanasati taught in its historic home region. Dipabhavan, the sister center on Koh Samui founded by Ajahn Poh, adds two seven-day retreats monthly for those who cannot commit to ten. This is the source, priced like one.
