Meditation / Vipassana in DharamshalaIN
A hill town in Himachal Pradesh and seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile. McLeod Ganj, the upper section of town, houses the Dalai Lama's residence, the Tushita Meditation Centre, and one of the most concentrated communities of Tibetan Buddhist practitioners outside Tibet.
Why here
McLeod Ganj, the upper quarter of Dharamshala, is home to the Dalai Lama's residence, the Tibetan government-in-exile, and one of the most concentrated communities of serious Buddhist practitioners outside Tibet. Tushita Meditation Centre sits above the town in pine forest and runs Introduction to Buddhism courses, 10-day silent retreats, and teacher-led programs in the Tibetan Mahayana tradition. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives offers teachings and language courses. This is the right destination for practitioners drawn to the Tibetan tradition specifically, and for anyone who wants time in a community that has built a genuine practice infrastructure from the ground up, under difficult circumstances.
Best months
The best windows are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), missing peak monsoon (July to August) and the coldest winter months (December to February). Tushita's Introduction to Buddhism course runs multiple times a year; check the center's schedule and book months in advance. The town fills with students during summer, which can make the retreat context feel less contained. Winter is possible but cold at 1,457m, and some programs pause.
Getting there & around
The nearest airport is Gaggal (DHM), 13km from town, with connections from Delhi. Alternatively, take the Jammu Mail train from Delhi to Pathankot (approximately 8 hours) then bus or taxi onward to Dharamshala (2.5 hours). McLeod Ganj is small and walkable. Tushita requires advance registration; applications typically open 3 months before each course date. The center provides accommodation and meals for course participants.
