Why here

Bodh Gaya is where the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, and the Mahabodhi Temple complex that marks the spot is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most potent places in the world to sit in practice. The Dhamma Bodhi center, run by the S.N. Goenka organization, holds 10-day Vipassana courses in the formal tradition throughout the season. The density of monasteries from different Buddhist nations (Burma, Tibet, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Korea) and the proximity of serious practitioners from across Asia create an environment unlike any meditation center built on a blank plot. The practice is inextricably tied to the place.

The season is October to March, when Bihar's climate is manageable and the pilgrimage community is active. December and January bring intense pilgrim traffic, especially during the Kalachakra period when tens of thousands of Tibetan practitioners converge on the town. April to June is extremely hot and largely empty. The monsoon (July to September) closes most formal courses. Dhamma Bodhi courses book out well in advance for peak season; applications should go in at least 2-3 months ahead.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Gaya Airport (GAY) from Kolkata or Delhi, or take an overnight train from Kolkata (approximately 8 hours) or Delhi (approximately 12 hours). Gaya is 13km from Bodh Gaya; auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws make the run regularly. The area around the temple is dense with budget guesthouses and dharamshalas. Food is predominantly vegetarian. Dhamma Bodhi requires a pre-course application; walk-ins are not accepted for 10-day courses.
