Martial Arts Training in OkinawaJP

A subtropical island chain 1,600km southwest of Tokyo and the birthplace of karate. Traditional dojo culture persists here in a way it does nowhere else, with lineages tracing directly back to the founders of Shorin-ryu and Goju-ryu.

Why here

Karate was born in Okinawa, developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom before Japan annexed the islands in 1879, and the traditional schools here carry lineages that predate the versions exported to the mainland and the world. The Okinawa Karate Kaikan, opened in 2017 with government backing, provides a formal practice space and orientation point, but the real value is in the traditional dojos scattered across Naha and the central island: Shorin-ryu practitioners at Shuri-te lineage dojos, Goju-ryu practitioners at schools tracing back to Miyagi Chojun. This is where you come to study the source material.

Best months

March to May and October to November are the best windows, avoiding typhoon season (June to September) and the most intense summer heat. Typhoon season is real; storms can shut activity for days at a time. Okinawa's subtropical climate means humidity is a factor even in spring. Most traditional dojos welcome serious foreign visitors who make contact in advance and arrive with existing karate experience. Cold approaches rarely succeed; a letter of introduction from your home dojo helps.

Getting there & around

Moderate logistics

Fly into Naha Airport (OKA) from Tokyo (about 2.5 hours), Osaka, or direct international connections. Naha is the main city and natural base. The Okinawa Karate Kaikan is in Tomigusuku, 20 minutes from Naha by car. A rental car is useful for reaching dojos across the island. Contact dojos well in advance; most traditional schools maintain strict protocols around new students. The Okinawa Prefectural Government's karate promotion resources list registered dojos willing to receive foreign visitors.
