Why here

Chiang Mai is where Muay Thai training stops being a tourist add-on and becomes a lifestyle. The city hosts dozens of gyms, from raw fighter-focused camps on the outskirts to polished operations with English-speaking trainers, and the cost of living lets you train twice a day for weeks without straining your budget. The fight scene is active year-round, so dedicated students can test themselves in a real stadium bout. Between sessions, you are in one of Southeast Asia's most liveable cities: old-city temples, mountain air, and a community of long-stay travelers who came for a week and stayed for a season.

Training runs year-round, but the cool season (November to February) is the most comfortable window, with mornings around 15-20C instead of the heat and humidity of April. The burning season (late February through April) brings serious air-quality problems; anyone doing two-a-day cardio-heavy training should avoid these months. The rainy season (June to October) is workable since sessions are under cover, but expect humidity between rounds.

Getting there & around

Straightforward logistics

Fly into Chiang Mai International (CNX), with direct connections from Bangkok (70 minutes). Most gyms sit within a 20-minute Grab ride of the old city, and many offer on-site or partnered accommodation from around $200 per month all-in. No visa complications for stays under 30-60 days for most nationalities; longer stays typically use education visas arranged through the larger gyms. Book training by the week or month. Walk-ins are normal at most gyms outside peak season.
