Kitesurfing in Sotavento
Tidal lagoon on Fuerteventura's south coast, accelerated by the Jandia massif into the most reliable wind in the Canaries.
Why here
Sotavento is the one Canary spot whose autumn wind collapse never quite arrives on schedule. The Jandia massif squeezes the trades into a double Venturi down the island's south coast, and the result in October is roughly an eighty percent wind probability, which is a floor almost nowhere else in Europe can offer that late in the year. The riding is a tidal lagoon that fills into a vast shallow flat and drains to expose sandbanks, so the same beach is a beginner lagoon at one state of tide and open bump-and-jump at another. Two long-established centers work the beach, which means gear, rescue and structure rather than a man with a van.
Best months
October is the tail of the season rather than its peak, and the honest framing is that you are buying a high floor rather than a high ceiling. July and August blow harder. What October gives you is the same wind probability with a fraction of the crowd and cheaper flights. The lagoon is entirely tide dependent: at high water it is a flat shallow bay ideal for learning, and at low water it drains and the riding moves outside onto choppier open water. Check the tide table before you book lessons, not after. Water is cooler than the air suggests and most people are in a shorty by late October.
Getting there & around
Fly into Fuerteventura airport at Puerto del Rosario and drive about an hour south to the Costa Calma and Jandia strip. A hire car is close to essential: the centers sit on an exposed beach several kilometers from most accommodation and there is no useful public transport along that stretch. The two centers are large operations attached to hotels, which sets the tone of the place. It is a package-holiday coast rather than a village, so if you want atmosphere you will need to drive for it. Instruction is available in Spanish, German and English.
