Kitesurfing in El Medano
Tenerife's wind town, with the strongest school infrastructure in the Canaries and a season that runs opposite to the rest of Europe.
Why here
El Medano has the strongest kitesurfing school infrastructure in the Canaries, and October is its weakest month of the year. Both of those things are true and you should book knowing them. The town is a genuine wind town, several established centers, gear everywhere, a culture built around the water rather than around a hotel, and the acceleration zone off the south of Tenerife delivers for most of the year. October is the gap between the summer trades and the winter pattern; one independent ranking puts the month at 106th among global spots. Operators here advertise year-round riding, and that is marketing rather than meteorology.
Best months
October is the honest problem with this destination and the reason it sits outside best months despite everything else being excellent. The summer acceleration off the Jandia and Teide topography weakens through the autumn, and October is the trough before winter systems arrive. You will get riding days; you should not build a one-week trip around getting them consecutively. When it does blow, the water off Playa del Medano and Playa Sur is choppy and cross-shore rather than flat, so this is not a lagoon destination and never has been. It suits an intermediate consolidating skills more than a first-timer. Water is cool enough for a shorty most of the year.
Getting there & around
Fly into Tenerife South, which is ten minutes away and is the single best logistical fact about the place. El Medano is a walkable town with real restaurants, a resident wind community and year-round schools, so it works well as a base even on light days, and there is enough on Tenerife to fill them. Multiple centers operate here, so you have a fallback if one is booked, which is more than most spots on this list can say. Instruction is available in English, German, Spanish and several other languages. If your dates are fixed to October, treat this as a good town with a poor month and set expectations accordingly.
