Why here
The Vinales valley is made for the saddle. Between the mogotes, the round-topped limestone towers that give the valley its shape, run tobacco and coffee fields worked much as they were a century ago, and the tracks between the farms are too rough and too rural for a bus. On horseback you ride from vega to vega, stopping at a tobacco drying house to watch a farmer roll a cigar, at a coffee finca, and often at a cave with an underground river. Two family operators run the rides with their own horses and guides, Riding Vinales and JMC Vinales Aventura, both rooted in the valley rather than bussed in from Havana.
Best months
Rides run year-round and are typically half-day, three to five hours at an easy walk suited to beginners. The tobacco planting and harvest cycle runs roughly November to March, the best window to see the fields worked and the drying houses full. Summer is hot and wet with afternoon downpours; mornings are the cooler ride.
Getting there & around
Vinales is about two and a half to three hours west of Havana and most people stay in a casa particular in the village. Rides are easy to book a day ahead directly with either operator, who can also arrange the transfer from Havana. No riding experience is needed; the pace is gentle and the horses are used to first-timers.

JMC Vinales Aventura
GuideJMC Vinales Aventura is a Cuban family operation in the UNESCO-listed Vinales Valley, led by horse experts Jose-Manuel and Tati with named, well-kept horses. Rides of four to nine hours visit tobacco plantations, coffee farms and rum producers with tastings, and usually end with a home-cooked Cuban meal at the family house. It also runs horse-cart rides, hikes and sunrise excursions.
