Horse Riding / Equestrian in Jerez de la FronteraES

A small sherry-producing city in the heart of Andalusia that many flamenco scholars consider the true birthplace of the form — rawer and less polished than Seville, closer to the gypsy roots.

Why here

Jerez is the center of classical Spanish horsemanship. The Real Escuela Andaluza de Arte Ecuestre is one of the four great classical dressage academies in the world, alongside Vienna, Lisbon, and Saumur. The school holds public training sessions Tuesday through Friday mornings where you can watch the haute ecole work in progress, and full performance shows on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Baroque horses and live music. Beyond the school, the wider Jerez area has breeding farms for the Andalusian and Carthusian horse breeds, and several independent schools offering dressage instruction, trail riding through the sherry vineyard country, and multi-day equestrian circuits in the rolling Cadiz landscape.

March through May and September through November are the most comfortable for outdoor riding. Summer is hot (38C+ in July-August) but training at the Real Escuela continues through early morning sessions year-round. The school operates on a reduced schedule in August. Spring coincides with the Feria del Caballo (Horse Fair) in late April or early May, which showcases traditional Andalusian riding culture at its most concentrated and is worth timing your visit around.

The Real Escuela shows and morning sessions can be booked directly through their website; the shows sell out during peak periods. For riding instruction and trail riding, several independent farms and riding schools around Jerez take bookings; ask at your accommodation for current recommendations.
